Your garden is an important part of your home: a fun place to eat, play, relax, garden, harvest together and above all enjoy all its beauty. IMBY prefers ecological gardens with lots of variety and layers of greenery, scents and colours throughout all seasons and where nature fits right in.
In Belgium, only 3% of land area is set aside as nature reserves. This is not enough to protect our biodiversity and many species are struggling. All gardens together cover 10% of our land.
Every ecological, natural garden contributes to a large green network where nature is given every opportunity. The size of your garden does not matter, even a small urban garden can be ecologically designed. IMBY would like to work with you on this. Locally - however small - we can help make a difference. Step by step, one garden at a time! Will you join us?
An ecological garden is not only an oasis for you and a habitat for plants and animals, but it also provides us with numerous free services. After all, trees produce oxygen, provide us with clean water and stop erosion. A garden with a large variety in vegetation acts as a sponge to retain water and provides cooling in hot dry summers. The more native plants you have in your garden, the more insects find their ideal habitat here. These keep pests and diseases in check and are important food for birds and hedgehogs. Thanks to our pollinators - butterflies, bees, and bumblebees - you can harvest berries, apples and vegetables.
In short,
an ecological garden is a resilient garden, better adapted to the vagaries of the climate and the diversity is pleasing to the eye. This
drawing summarises some of the benefits.
